About Uncap
Uncap lives in your menu bar. Hold the fn key, say what you mean, and let go — Uncap transcribes it, tidies up the filler and the punctuation, and drops clean text right where your cursor already was. It works in any app you can type in: Mail, Slack, Xcode, a browser text box, anywhere.
Everything happens on your Mac. There is no account, no login, and no server. Your voice never leaves the machine.
Requirements
macOS 26 or later on an Apple silicon Mac. The on-device speech and text cleanup Uncap relies on are not available on Intel Macs.
Getting Started
- Launch Uncap. It has no Dock icon — look for the waveform in your menu bar.
- Grant Accessibility access when prompted (System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility), then relaunch Uncap. This is what lets it notice the dictation key and place text into other apps.
- Click into any text field, hold fn, speak, and release.
- Allow Microphone access the first time you do this.
Common Questions
What is free, and what does the unlock cost?
Your first 50 dictations are free, so you can decide with your own voice and your own apps rather than a demo. After that, a one-time $39.99 purchase unlocks Uncap for good. There is no subscription and nothing recurring. Because it counts dictations rather than days, a trial you never got around to using is still waiting for you.
I bought Uncap on another Mac. Do I need to buy it again?
No. The unlock follows your Apple Account. Sign in to the same Apple Account on the other Mac and Uncap will recognize the purchase on its own. If it doesn't, open Uncap's settings and choose Restore Purchases.
Nothing happens when I hold fn.
Almost always this is Accessibility access. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility, make sure Uncap is listed and switched on, then quit and relaunch Uncap — the key monitor does not pick up a newly granted permission while the app is running.
Can I use a key other than fn?
Yes. Open Uncap's settings from the menu bar item and pick a different hold-to-talk key. If fn is already doing something you rely on, this is the fix.
Does Uncap break the fn key for everything else?
No. Uncap watches the key without consuming it, so the emoji picker and your function-key behavior keep working as they always did.
Text lands in the wrong place, or not at all.
Uncap inserts text at the system's current focus. Click directly into the field you want before you start speaking, and don't switch apps while the pill is on screen. If a paste fails outright, Uncap deliberately leaves the dictated text on your clipboard so nothing you said is lost — press ⌘V to place it yourself.
What happens to whatever I had copied?
Uncap restores it. Text is inserted by briefly putting it on the clipboard and pasting, and your previous clipboard contents are put back immediately afterward. The one exception is a failed paste, where the dictated text stays on the clipboard on purpose.
Does Uncap work offline?
Yes, completely. Speech recognition and text cleanup both run on your Mac. The only time Uncap uses the network at all is to check with the App Store about your purchase.
Does Uncap send my voice anywhere?
No. Audio is transcribed on-device and discarded as soon as the transcript exists. It is never written to a file and never uploaded. There are no ads and no third-party trackers. See our Privacy Policy.
Can I teach it names and jargon?
Yes. Uncap keeps a personal dictionary you can add to, so proper nouns, product names, and the words your field uses come out spelled the way you spell them.
How do I get a refund?
