Uncap Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy describes how Everlight Digital ("we", "us") handles information when you use Uncap Dictation ("Uncap") on your Mac.
Uncap collects nothing. There is no account, no login, and no server. Your voice is recorded, transcribed, and cleaned up entirely on your own Mac, and the resulting text is placed into whatever app you were already typing in. Nothing you say and nothing Uncap writes is ever transmitted to us or to anyone else.
Information We Collect
- Audio (never leaves your Mac): While you hold the dictation key, Uncap captures microphone audio. It is transcribed on-device using Apple's built-in speech recognition and is discarded as soon as the transcript exists. Audio is never written to a file, never uploaded, and never sent to us.
- Transcribed text (never leaves your Mac): The transcript is tidied up on-device — using Apple's on-device Foundation Models where available, and simple built-in formatting rules otherwise — and then inserted at your cursor. Recent dictations are kept locally, on your Mac only, so you can review them; you can clear them at any time.
- Your custom dictionary and style settings: Words and preferences you add are stored locally in Uncap's own sandboxed app container on your Mac.
- Purchases: If you buy the one-time unlock, the purchase is handled entirely by Apple through the App Store and StoreKit. We never receive your name, your payment details, or your Apple ID.
- Device / diagnostic data: If you choose to share diagnostics with Apple, standard crash reports may be made available to us in aggregated, non-identifying form through App Store Connect.
How We Use Information
We do not use your information, because we never receive it. Everything Uncap does with your audio and your text happens locally on your Mac, in order to turn what you said into text you can paste.
How We Share Information
- Apple App Store / StoreKit — processes the one-time unlock purchase and tells Uncap whether you own it. This is the only network connection Uncap makes.
We do not sell your data. Uncap contains no advertising, no third-party analytics, and no tracking SDKs. There is no Everlight Digital server involved in using Uncap at all.
Permissions Uncap Asks For
- Microphone — required to hear you while you hold the dictation key. Uncap does not listen at any other time.
- Speech Recognition — required to turn that audio into text on your device.
- Accessibility — required so Uncap can notice the dictation key being held and insert the finished text into the app you are working in. Uncap watches for that one key and never records or stores your other keystrokes.
Every one of these can be revoked at any time in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
Clipboard
Uncap inserts text by briefly placing it on the clipboard and pasting it, then restoring whatever you had copied before. If a paste cannot be completed, the dictated text is deliberately left on the clipboard so your words are not lost — in that one case, your previous clipboard contents are replaced.
Children
Uncap is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their personal information.
Your Rights
Because we hold no data about you, there is nothing for us to export or delete. You can clear Uncap's local history from within the app, revoke any permission in System Settings, and remove all local data by deleting the app. EU/UK users have GDPR rights; California users have CCPA rights. Contact brendan@everlight-digital.com.
Security
Uncap runs inside the macOS App Sandbox. Its settings and history are stored in its own sandboxed container and protected by your Mac's own file protections and FileVault, if you have it enabled.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy. Material changes will be announced in-app.
