HRV for athletes: what it is and why it matters
Heart rate variability shows up on almost every fitness watch and ring now, usually as a number next to your resting heart rate with little explanation of what it means. It's worth understanding, because of every metric your wearable collects overnight, HRV is the one that comes closest to directly measuring how taxed your body actually is — not how hard you trained, but how well you're handling it.
What HRV actually measures
Your heart doesn't beat on a perfect metronome. Even at a steady resting heart rate, the exact time between one beat and the next varies slightly — a little longer here, a little shorter there. Heart rate variability is a measurement of that variation, usually in milliseconds. It sounds like noise you'd want to smooth out, but the variation itself is the signal.
That variation is controlled by your autonomic nervous system — the part running in the background, split between a "fight or flight" branch (sympathetic) and a "rest and digest" branch (parasympathetic). When your parasympathetic system has room to do its job, your heartbeat timing has more natural variation. When your sympathetic system is dominant — because you're stressed, under-recovered, or fighting something off — that variation flattens out. Counter-intuitively, more variation is the good sign. A higher HRV generally means your nervous system has slack; a lower one means it's working harder just to keep you upright.
What moves it, day to day
HRV responds to almost everything you put your body through. A hard training session lowers it that night as your body redirects resources toward repair. Poor or short sleep lowers it. So does alcohol, dehydration, high stress, travel, and the early days of getting sick — often before you feel anything is wrong, which is why some athletes notice a dip a day or two before symptoms show up. On the other side, good sleep, easy training days, and a well-timed rest block tend to bring it back up.
Because so many things move it, a single morning's reading isn't very informative on its own. HRV also has a fair amount of natural day-to-day noise even when nothing is wrong — it's a live biological signal, not a fixed number. That's exactly why looking at one reading in isolation leads people astray.
Your baseline, not a leaderboard
The number that matters is never the raw HRV value — it's how today compares to your own recent baseline. A 45ms reading might be a strong recovered morning for one person and a rough undertrained morning for another, because resting HRV varies enormously by age, genetics, fitness level, and even how it's measured. Comparing your number to a training partner's or to some number you saw online is close to meaningless. Comparing it to your own trailing average over the last one to two weeks is where the useful information lives.
Read that way, HRV becomes less of a score and more of a conversation your body is having with you. A single low morning after a hard session is expected and not worth worrying about — that's your body doing exactly what it should. A sustained dip below your baseline over several days, especially alongside a climbing resting heart rate, is the signal worth listening to. It's telling you the load is outpacing the recovery, before that shows up as a bad workout or an injury.
